I want to follow the kind of preacher
Who, to his students, makes a fine teacher.
Although your words may be very wise
It is how you live, it is who you abide;
You may preach the finest sermon
But it is what you do that I am observing.
Are you a leader, a man of your word
Or a hypocrite from whom I should turn?
Faith in action we long to see
Be an example we can believe.
If my soul you wish to claim
For God’s glory and not fame,
Practice what you preach each day
Do not merely point the way.
I will best learn how to do it
If at first I see it done;
Let me see your hands in action
As your tongue, too fast, may run.
The best of all the preachers
Are those who live their creeds;
Christ was our example
The greatest teacher ever seen.
I may misunderstand you
Or the counsel that you give
But there is no misunderstanding
How you act and how you live.

I’m a firm believer in teaching by example. That’s how I raised my son, and that’s what I expect from the clergy. Great poem.

Thank you for the compliment and for visiting. “Teaching by example” is probably the best advice a parent could ever receive!
